Wild Mushroom Illustrations

- Acrylic, pen, charcoal, colored pencil

While working from home for much of 2020 I became fascinated with learning to identify the trees, edible plants, and fungi that grow on our land in Keezletown. I quickly learned to appreciate the incredible variety of mushrooms that often go unnoticed until we take the time to slow down and really look. This series of illustrations documents some of the mushrooms I have found and learned about in our area. There are a lot of reasons to get excited about mushrooms. They are beautiful, delicious, medicinal, weird and a very important part of our ecosystem. They break down waste, return nutrients to the soil and connect with plants to share resources. Learning to identify mushrooms can be intimidating, and a little scary if you intend to find edible ones, some are deadly poisonous, but when we slow down and really look there are pretty obvious characteristics to watch for. I added labels to these drawings to point out some of the things I have learned to look for. I will keep learning more and hope this work inspires others to do the same.
